Summary

In this stunning follow-up to Hollow Kingdom, the animal kingdom's "favorite apocalyptic hero"is back with a renewed sense of hope for humanity, ready to take on a world ravaged by a viral pandemic (Helen Macdonald)。 Once upon an apocalypse, there lived an obscenely handsome American crow named S。T。 。 。 。 When the world last checked-in with its favorite Cheeto addict, the planet had been overrun by flesh-hungry beasts, and nature had started re-claiming her territory from humankind。 S。T。, the intrepid crow, alongside his bloodhound-bestie Dennis, had set about saving pets that had become trapped in their homes after humanity went the way of the dodo。 That is, dear reader, until S。T。 stumbled upon something so rare--and so precious--that he vowed to do everything in his power to safeguard what could, quite literally, be humanity's last hope for survival。 But in a wild world plagued by prejudiced animals, feather-raising environments, new threats so terrifying they make zombies look like baby bunnies, and a horrendous dearth of cheesy snacks, what's a crow to do? Why, wing it on another big-hearted, death-defying adventure, that's what! Joined by a fabulous new cast of animal characters, S。T。 faces many new challenges plus his biggest one yet: parenthood。

up Hollow Kingdom just shy of a year ago and managed to completely fall in love with a strange crow known as ST。 Such a unique concept, an apocalyptic world, destroyed by humans, or mofos as we are known in the Hollow Kingdom, and a story told by animals as they try to survive。 A world where nature is slowly reclaiming her lost territory, until further changes and abominations begin to slowly surface。 I really enjoyed this strange mix of refreshingly original, darkly funny and sometimes slightly horror soaked storytelling and I highly recommend it。Again, with a dubious heart, I picked up Feral Creatures。 Dubious simply because, well, firstly, I wasn’t expecting a second book so it was a surprise – a very welcome one of course – but then, let’s be honest, sometimes second books suffer the dreaded Middle Book Syndrome and I had such good memories of the first in series – anyway, hold the phone because this book was even more of all the goodness that made Hollow Kingdom such an excellent read。 More animals, more emotion, more fantastic writing。 I loved it。 Now, I know you’re all super excited and want to pick this one up right now, but, listen to my wise words – if you haven’t already read the first then pick that up before reading this- also spoilers may be present for book one so be warned, if you haven’t yet started the series, stop reading now。Feral Creatures starts almost immediately where Hollow Kingdom left off。 ST is looking after a young human nestling, a baby if you will, known as Dee。 Between ST and the owls they take care of this fragile little human who seems to attract wildlife and nature with apparent ease。 In certain respects you could call this a coming of age tale, also a tale of a parent letting go of their beloved child。 This is a dangerous world and ST doesn’t want to let go, he wants to run and hide with his beloved mofo。 Dee has other ideas。 She thinks she’s part crow, part owl, part bee, well, basically she’s a carefree and wild young woman simply trying to win the approval of her strange family。 At the same time as all this ‘coming of age’ tale is taking place the world is changing, humans are changing, and the nature of the wild is in danger。 Dee could be the key to maintaining balance but ST, having already lost two beloved family members, is more intent on keeping her hidden and out of harm’s way。 At the end of the day ST is about to come to terms with the lesson that most parents eventually learn – your children grow up, they want to become adults, they want you to be proud but they want to make their own choices。In one word I can tell you what I loved about this: everything。 The story itself is again intriguing。 The author manages to bring to you a story of family and the difficulty of letting go of your fledglings。 Dee is a fantastic character but she’s supported by a wonderful cast of animals and birds that simply makes the goosebumps stand up on your arms。 Imagine being beloved of such a range of critters。 It gives me happy feelings。 Then Dee。 Desperate for acceptance, longing for approval, making bold strides forward when ST simply wants to hide her under a rock。 I just loved this dynamic。 How on earth can we have a post apocalyptic world of, quite possibly the strangest make up I’ve ever read, and yet have a completely domestic, family feel between such a discordant bunch of characters。 It’s absolutely mind blowing and I loved it。Now, add to this the writing。 Oh my giddy aunt。 The writing is beautiful。 It’s funny There are references aplenty。 But, more than that, the writing is simply bewitching。 Like, every little bit of what is on the page feels ‘animalistic’ or ‘birdlike’ or from the realm of insects。 It’s simply wonderful。 I feel completely in awe of the writing because every element feels as though it was chosen to help you delve into the wonder of nature。 The animals and their movements are described with a charming simplicity but on top of that all the descriptions have a natural feel to them that brings another element to the story。 Also, wow, so clever。 Don’t be thinking to rush through this because although it is actually a quick read – you need to pay attention or else you will miss so many of the little plays that are going on and they’re just delightful。My emotions ran riot。 I did actually cry whilst reading this and that is not something that I do lightly or actually admit to very often。 It was the emotional impact of what was going on。 I just couldn’t help myself。 There’s a beauty to this, a simplicity and at the same time it just resonates。 How that can actually be possible? I don’t know。 Basically the author has tapped into something here about all creatures and the roles they play。 It’s touching, it’s familiar and it’s insightful。And of course there are still the horror elements。 This is a world altered beyond recognition。 The beauty of this story is that we don’t really follow or reflect on the human struggle as such and that’s what makes this so gloriously original。Look, I’m going to stop here。 I think I’ve quite possibly gushed enough。 Frankly I think this will be one of my top reads of the year。 It certainly surpassed the first and if there is a further instalment, which I suspect might very well be a possibility (please make it happen), well, consider me here for that。 In fact just give me the book, now。 Pretty please。I received a copy through Netgalley, courtesy of the publisher, for which my thanks。 The above is my own opinion。 。。。more

The other animals don’t call him “The One Who Keeps” for nothing。 If anyone can do it, it is S。T。 Dee acts very much like a human and frequently does stupid things with good intentions。 But doesn’t she deserve a chance to live her life as best she can?I have to admit it。 It took me longer to fall in love again with S。T。 in this book than in its predecessor。 I agreed with the feathered (birds) that raising a human was not the best decision in a world ruined by them。 But S。T。’s love for humans shines through everything—including my reservations。Feral Creatures is ultimately a grand quest。 Instead of Homer, you have a foul-mouthed and funny crow。 But he still protects his damsel-in-distress in the face of discord with his friends and enemies on all sides。 How can you not want to go along for the ride? 5 stars and a favorite!Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for providing the advanced review copy of the book that I won at the Publisher’s Weekly Galley Grab。 It in no way impacted my honest review of the book。 。。。more

I read the Kindle edition。 The author's writing displays a profound love and connection with the natural world。 It is a cautionary tale of the damage humans are doing to the earth。 It is written with wit and wisdom in her unique style; her books contain hilarity, sadness, joy, danger, and fear。 There are vivid descriptions of nature。 They address a thought-provoking, guilt-inducing awareness of how we are destroying our precious earth and its creatures and contributing to climate change。 Buxton I read the Kindle edition。 The author's writing displays a profound love and connection with the natural world。 It is a cautionary tale of the damage humans are doing to the earth。 It is written with wit and wisdom in her unique style; her books contain hilarity, sadness, joy, danger, and fear。 There are vivid descriptions of nature。 They address a thought-provoking, guilt-inducing awareness of how we are destroying our precious earth and its creatures and contributing to climate change。 Buxton is a wordsmith, slipping in absurd references to our present culture through the narrator's words, S。T。, an obscenely handsome and intelligent flightless crow who peppers his utterances with vulgar language。 S。T。(Shit Turd) was named by his owner when he was the tamed pet of Big Jim。 He learned his foul language from his master and uses it innocently。 Big Jim called humans mofos, and S。T。 refers to them the same way。 They are called in the wider world 'Hollow' due to their disconnection from nature。 S。T。 watched the National Geographic documentaries and has a wide knowledge of the history and culture of mankind。 He denies belonging to the crow species and identifies with humankind。 The rumour was that humans were so attached to their iPhones and other electronic devices, thus ignoring nature, that resulted from a virus from their screens infecting them and turning them into zombies。 One day, S。T。 observed Big Jim's eyeball fall out, and the man became a dim-witted slobbering mess。 This was the beginning of the Zombie Apocalypse, and now Big Jim and other mofos have vanished from the earth。 From his home in Washington State, S。T。 ventured forth with his friend, Dennis, the dog, to rescue household pets, farm and zoo animals。 Birds and beasts soon joined them with the wider goal to find any human who might have survived。 I loved the Hollow Kingdom and rushed to download Feral Creatures on its publication day。 I regret to say I struggled with this book。 I thought the plot was too scattered with too much going on。 This detracted from my developing any deep emotional attachment。 I wanted to rate it higher but began to feel detached from the story。 However, the author displayed a towering imagination。 The story begins in Alaska, where S。T。 has found a human baby girl he names Dee。 He is overjoyed and regards her as his nestling, and he takes on the father role。 He intends to raise her to have human morals, manners, and culture。 As Dee grows, she becomes more deeply attached to birds, animals, insects, trees, and plants than to S。T。s teaching。 Many of the creatures cooperate to keep S。T。's nestling safe, but some beasts recall the human destruction of the earth and how they killed animals, overfished, and contributed to climate change。 Huge, ferocious hybrid creatures, The Changed Ones, have evolved and are part animal and what was once zombies。 They are not happy with the newcomer in their midst。 S。T。 returns with Dee to his former State with the help of Orcas。 The place much changed, and not for the better。 Changed Ones are lurking and presenting a great danger。 How will they survive, and will they receive any assistance? Although I was not as impressed with this book as with the Hollow Kingdom, I did like the author's vivid imagination and descriptions of the thoughts and behaviour of various animal and insect species。 The book was a tribute to her love of the natural world which shone through on every page。 。。。more

Feral Creatures by Kira Jane Buxton was one of my most anticipate releases of 2021 and what can I say but it did not disappoint。 I make it no secret that I absolutely adored its predecessor Hollow Kingdom and fell immediately in love with its protagonist, a cheeky crass-talking American crow named S。T。 which is short for Shit Turd—I kid you not。 If you’re sitting there thinking, hey, this sounds a little different…well, you’ve got that right。But obviously, if you’re read the first book, you already know all this。 If you haven’t, then I highly recommend picking up Hollow Kingdom before tackling this one。 The author does make some attempt to remind readers of prior events or to rehash a few concepts here or there, but for the most part, Feral Creatures is meant to be experienced as a direct sequel。 In it, we catch up with S。T。 approximately a decade after the previous book ended。 Mother nature and her animals have begun reclaiming the planet, now that all the world’s humans have succumbed to a catastrophic disease turning them into ravenous, bloodthirsty beasts (read: zombies)。All except one。 Dee is perfect。 For whatever reason, this beautiful tiny infant had evaded the viral pandemic which turned the rest of her species into the mindless, hollow shells of what they once were。 And S。T。, who had found her, immediately fell in love as a mother bird would their nestling。 Raised by a human, S。T。 still feels a desperate longing for the life he once shared with his owner Big Jim, back when they were still surrounded by the comforts and luxuries of civilization—among them Cheetos and TV。 In Dee, he sees a glimmer of hope for humans (or MoFos, as that was the word Big Jim had used all the time to refer to other people) and perhaps an opportunity to one day bring back humanity’s past glory。 So, armed with his fond memories of Big Jim and an idealistic view of the future, S。T。 resolves to raise Dee “proper。”Unfortunately, this plan is immediately met with opposition and numerous challenges。 First of all, not all of S。T。’s fellow animals are as pleased with the news that a baby MoFo had survived。 Many of their kind had experienced cruelty and death at the hands of humankind, unlike S。T。, who is a domesticated crow。 And second, there’s Dee herself。 As the years go by, the girl can’t seem to help growing up more animal than MoFo, no matter how hard S。T。 tries to impress upon her the incredible history and achievements of her species。 But who could blame her? She is, after all, being raised in the Alaskan wilds by a cussy crow, a parliament of owls, and a clumsy yet lovable young muskox。When I say Feral Creatures is even better than the first book, I’m not saying that lightly。 Hollow Kingdom was a monument to originality and humor, combining the outrageous with the philosophical, and the fact that this sequel was able to carry through and improve upon those trends is nothing short of an amazing feat。 This book was gut-bustingly whacky and hilarious, thanks once more to S。T。’s delightfully obscene narrative and larger-than life personality。 Everything he knows, he learned from Big Jim。 And while we never once get to see Big Jim on the page, his spirit lives on in S。T。’s memories, and from those flashbacks, readers can glean a relationship that goes beyond the simple dynamics of owner and pet。Big Jim’s influence can also be seen in the way S。T。 attempts to raise Dee, and here the novel explores the themes of parenthood in addition to the independence-seeking behaviors of children as they grow older—a touchingly heart-warming and sometimes wrenching commentary on when to let go and allow your little fledglings to fly on their own。 Despite our protagonist being a crow, his motivations are surprisingly human and familiar。 His fierce love and protective instincts for his child, for instance, not to mention his hopes and dreams for the future as well as his powerful, wistful longing for the happy times of the past are all too easy to relate to。At its heart though, the point of the Hollow Kingdom series is to put the focus on the animals, and I was thrilled that Feral Creatures continued a tradition that I loved from the first book, featuring brief interludes from the perspective of creatures from all over the world。 Some have had a better time adapting to this drastically changed reality than others, and the presence of these chapters also reminds us that what’s happening is a global phenomenon。Obviously, if you enjoyed the first book, then you will probably love this one as well。 If you’re contemplating this series though, there are a few caveats。 Humor being so subjective, these books won’t be for everyone, and you really have to be okay with the over-the-top premise and the style of S。T。’s narration, namely his coarseness and a potty mouth that just keeps on overflowing。 I wouldn’t say it’s too extreme though, and more often than not it was done in a clever and quippy way that made me admire the author’s way with words instead of turning me off。All I know is, I will never regret the day I decided to take a chance on something a little different and ended up snagging myself a copy of Hollow Kingdom as a result。 I was rewarded with mind-blowing creativity, memorable animal characters, and an astoundingly witty yet thoughtful story, and I’m pleased to say that Feral Creatures followed in its predecessor’s footsteps and left even bigger prints besides! What an awesome sequel, and much like her stouthearted corvid protagonist, Kira Jane Buxton is one in a million。 。。。more

Just like Hollow Kingdom, Feral Creatures is perfection。 It’s a different story, with our beloved characters (plus many new ones) on a new quest, fighting new enemies。 We learn new things about old characters。 Old characters learn new things about themselves。But many things remain the same: the same dashing hero, the same utter hilarity, the same gorgeous storytelling。 It’s the same awesomeness that made me love Hollow Kingdom。As ST would say, Feral Creatures is a winner winner chicken dinner。

Despite my persona feelings regarding penguins, this book is a wonderful balance between an adventurous thriller, a swashbuckling odyssey, and a book about family。 But, not the biological family historically referred to。 Instead this is a family of human and animals that come together to form their own "murder," to use the term to describe a group of crows。 The writing is a wonderful blend of seriousness and humor so the reader is actually chuckling while biting their nails in worry。 As always, I really recommend you read Hollow Kingdom first。 I really do! The story picks up right where Hollow Kingdom left off。 But don't worry if you have not read the first book。 This book can totally be read as standalone as there was a brief recap of Hollow Kingdom in the beginning of the book! I always appreciate it when books do this! S。T is on a more dangerous journey this time since there are more Changed Ones out there。 Along the way, S。T met some new friends too。 There are quite a lot of new characters in this story and it was so fun reading about them。 I also liked it that the story is told from the view points of different animals too。 The writing was clever and engaging, and although there were not a lot of dialogues, I was immersed into the story。 I enjoyed it! I loved it when I get to learn new things from a book。 So, I just discovered what a hyrax is。 Super cute animal! And the nasty, repulsive ingredients used in perfume, especially Chanel No。5! How did I not hear about it before?! Overall, I enjoyed this book thoroughly! I'm hoping that there will be a third book。 It is such a unique, entertaining and heartwarming series! Keeping my review on the shorter side -- I absolutely loved Hollow Kingdom, which introduced us to ST and his post-apocalyptic world of rotting humans, domestic animals waiting to be freed, and tigers wandering the streets of Seattle。In this follow up, ST is once again our narrator, with chapters narrated by whales, spiders, and cats thrown into the mix。 The story picks up with ST now in Alaska, having found the last remaining MoFo (human) — a small baby girl with no one to raise her but ST and Keeping my review on the shorter side -- I absolutely loved Hollow Kingdom, which introduced us to ST and his post-apocalyptic world of rotting humans, domestic animals waiting to be freed, and tigers wandering the streets of Seattle。In this follow up, ST is once again our narrator, with chapters narrated by whales, spiders, and cats thrown into the mix。 The story picks up with ST now in Alaska, having found the last remaining MoFo (human) — a small baby girl with no one to raise her but ST and his friends。 ST is determined to protect Dee no matter what, hiding her away from the world and keeping her safe — but by isolating her, is he depriving her of the ability to discover her own true nature?Through the raucous escapades of ST and allies, the action moves from Alaskan wilderness to the Bering Sea and back to Seattle, with deeply funny and illuminating encounters with orcas and owls and polar bears along the way。 But all is not well in the wild kingdom。 Trees are dying, and the MoFos seem to have evolved from shambling zombies into Changed Ones — animal/human hybrids who are freakin’ scary and weird AF。ST’s narration is fabulous as always, a mix of vulgarity, impressive vocabulary, insightful introspection, and crazy digressions。 The writing in Feral Creatures veers between emotional impact and laugh-inducing craziness from moment to moment。I enjoyed a lot about this book… and yet at times, I just couldn’t wait to be done。 Maybe because this is a sequel, there’s less room for surprise and delight based on the premise, and the story’s action starts to feel drawn-out and repetitive at times。 Even while loving the writing, I did have to continually pull myself back from the brink of boredom when chapters went on too long, and even found myself considering DNFing at times。I’m glad I stuck with it, though。 Even when I grew tired of parts of the story, something amazing (like the arrival of a heard of musk oxen) would pull me back in。Definitely read Hollow Kingdom first — but if you loved that book, then you’ll want to read Feral Creatures too。 My impatience with the book may have more to do with my own reading mood than with the book itself, so take a look and see what you think!Review copy courtesy of the publisher via NetGalley。 Full review at Bookshelf Fantasies。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing, and Ms。 Buxton for the opportunity to read an ARC of this title。 An honest review was requested but not required。This is the sequel to Hollow Kingdom, which I absolutely adored, and picks up immediately where HK left off。 We rejoin the intrepid, potty-mouthed, Mo-Fo (human)-loving crow S。T。, short for Shit Turd, lovingly so named by his deceased former Mo-Fo partner Big Jim, as he raises his nestling Dee [also known as the last living Mo-Fo on ea Thank you to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing, and Ms。 Buxton for the opportunity to read an ARC of this title。 An honest review was requested but not required。This is the sequel to Hollow Kingdom, which I absolutely adored, and picks up immediately where HK left off。 We rejoin the intrepid, potty-mouthed, Mo-Fo (human)-loving crow S。T。, short for Shit Turd, lovingly so named by his deceased former Mo-Fo partner Big Jim, as he raises his nestling Dee [also known as the last living Mo-Fo on earth]。 S。T。 is raising Dee with a proverbial AND literal village of animal helpers。 This book has the same exquisite wordsmiths as its predecessor; perhaps even more so。 It CAN be a little dense and flowery at some points; I personally enjoyed following S。T。's labyrinthine thinking and speaking in all its crass, zany, zig-zag ebullience but I can see that it wouldn't be for everyone。 Basically, if you liked Hollow Kingdom, you will LOVE this; if HK wasn't for you, this won't be, either。 This story was just as bittersweet and painful to read as HK, perhaps more so, because the average Mo-Fo reader can read between the lines with regards to global warming and species eradication。 There are also several poignant moments with characters that quickly become favorites (I won't give any spoilers)。 We do get to revisit some fan favorites from HK but there are also some terrific new ones (I loved Budiwati, and of course Oomingmak)。 The offset chapters with seemingly random animals around the world (a dolphin, a hermit crab, a tegu, a charming Scottish donkey, etc) give the story some extra lyricism and some perspective outside the main narrative。 Here are some of my favorite passages: Grief can slam into you like a well-waxed window。 But it means the ones you love aren't lost or forgotten。 They've made a home in your heart, which is the most permanent place of all。<<>>Nerves and whiskey were in a vein-popping arm-wrestling match over who could embarrass me the most。<<>>"Yes," I said, standing before her like a Spirit Halloween wig that had been repeatedly brutalized by a Segway。<<>>Budiwati - legs made of electrical springs and the intensity of the Napoleons (Bonaparte and Dynamite) - leapt effortlessly over the wall of the Chateau, snatching me up in her beak and flinging me onto her shaggy back with manners akin to a coupon-clipping hippo at a Walmart on Black Friday。<<>>Love is the sun。 It burns tiger bright, illuminating the hart and searing away sadness。 What a beautifully brave act to hand over a heart。 To risk the burns of a blister-skinned sovereign。 Dee was my sun。 Just as bright。 Just a one。 Without her, the world would turn black。 Without her, I would wither and die。<<>>But they are still fakish faking beasts and I'm f*cking Genghis Cat。 They are imitation crab and Genghis is filet mignon Fancy Feast, b*tch。 <<>>Dee stroked my head and allowed me to chew on her arm。 I claimed her by rubbing my face on her finger。 This is a binding contract of ownership, throughout the universe, in perpetuity。 Really, you can find something to highlight on practically every page。 I must say it did strike me as a little ironic to read this book on my Kindle, seeing as the poor Hollow MoFos of the story fell victim to a screen-related virus。 But to me this book was *magic* and I'm sad to see S。T。 go。 It's possible, I suppose, that a book 3 could happen, considering how the story ended, but if it doesn't work out, this book ended in the perfect bittersweet way。 。。。more
